The west bank of Luxor became the prime site for royal burials as early as about 2100 BC. The pharaohs of the New Kingdom period (1550-1069 BC) were the first to choose this secluded valley dominated by the pyramid-shaped peak of Al Qurn (The Horn) mountain. Once called "The Necropolis of Millions of Years of Pharaohs" or "The Place of Truth", the Valley of the Kings contains 63 magnificent royal tombs, each one different from the next. The tombs have been plundered by numerous treasure hunters, and have suffered several floods over the years.
