Sinai Peninsula is a god-given paradise for Egypt and its people as a top tourist spot and has tons of must-see natural attractions, read the article now to find out how Sinai Peninsula has could attract tourists from all over the world!

The location and what to see in Sinai, paradise on the Red Sea

The Sinai Peninsula is located in the eastern part of Egypt, it is part of the Egyptian territory and state. To reach it you have to cross the Suez Canal , which was dug towards the end of the 19th century and which made the peninsula physically detached from the rest of the Egyptian hinterland. However, the Suez Canal is connected by an underground tunnel which facilitates the connection between the peninsula and the rest of Egypt . The Sinai peninsula is bounded to the east by the Gulf of Aqaba , to the north by the Mediterranean Sea and to the west by the Gulf of Suez and the Suez Canal.

The Sinai peninsula extends for a length (from north to south) of about 380 km and a width (from west to east) of about 210 km, for a total area of about 61,000 km². The coasts extend for a very long stretch, even reaching the total length of about 600 km. The Sinai peninsula is also a very important strategic point as it connects the African continent and the Asian continent.

Rugged and enchanted, the territory of Sinai is mainly made up of rock and sand, for an overall desert panorama that offers the traveler suggestive landscapes that are a beautiful natural composition of rocks shaped by the wind, desolate lands and the intense blue of the coasts of the Red Sea, surrounded by one of the richest coral reefs in the world, both in terms of corals and marine life.

Despite its small size and predominantly desert territory, Sinai is lively inhabited along the coast of Taba and Arish to the north, while the centers of Nuweiba, Dahab and Sharm El Sheikh are found along the southern coast . Not only rocks, deserts and beaches, Sinai is also particularly mountainous, especially inland.

In the southern part of the peninsula are the two main peaks; Mount St. Catherine (the highest mountain in Egypt) and Mount Sinai, where, who knows the history of Christianity will remember well, Moses received the ten commandments. Sinai is perfect if you love diving, hiking or trekking and also to explore religious history, many Christians in fact go on pilgrimage to Santa Caterina, whose monastery is among the oldest still in operation and has an annexed library, second only to that of the Vatican.

How to get to the Sinai Peninsula

Taba and Sharm el Sheikh are served by two airports respectively, while the city of Nuweiba has a port. The bus lines provide daily routes that connect the main seaside resorts with Cairo , there are buses to Sharm El Sheikh, Nuweiba and Dahab.

Traveling by bus is very cheap and convenient, but consider that even if the kilometers to travel are not so excessive, especially on the outward journey the journey is made longer in terms of hours by the multiple controls; in Suez before going through the tunnel and in Sharm El Sheikh you will be asked to get out of the car and open your backpack for an inspection.

This may make you think that the territory is not safe, on the contrary: the extensive number of checks guarantees the safety of the tourist resorts in southern Sinai.

The Suez Canal

The Suez Canal was inaugurated on November 17, 1869, it is an artificial canal that makes it possible to navigate from Europe to Asia, avoiding having to circumnavigate Africa. It connects Port Said, an Egyptian city on the Mediterranean, to Suez, which is located on the Red Sea. Currently only one tunnel connects the two ends, but there are plans to build two more motorway tunnels and a railway tunnel under the Suez Canal. The project also includes the construction of new roads which will make it possible and efficient to connect the underground tunnels to the existing road network and to that which will be developed in the future. Once completed, these infrastructures will help revive economic growth in the Sinai Peninsula, which was previously hampered by transportation and connectivity difficulties.
