The Hanging Church is located in the Coptic Cairo area where you can find an extraordinary complex of churches dedicated to various saints. The main church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
The Hanging Church was built in the 4th century AD, but was destroyed and rebuilt in the 11th century. Extensions and reconstructions then followed one another over the various historical periods, making it difficult to precisely date each part of the church. The marble pulpit and the ivory-inlaid partition walls, which hide the three areas of the altar, date from the period between the 10th and 13th centuries. The facade of the church, crowned by the characteristic twin bell towers, dates back to the 19th century. The external portico decorated with glass tiles with geometric motifs dates back to the 11th century. The central dividing wall that protects the main altar is among the finest in Egypt. The chapel of Takla Haymanot was already part of the 4th century church. The towers belonged to the southwestern bastion of the original Roman fortress and date back to the first century AD. The church possesses precious works of art.
