Safaga Port, Safaga Red Sea: Where it is

Port Safaga, also known simply as Safaga, is located in Egypt on the Red Sea coast , 53 km south of the popular tourist city of Hurghada . A paved road of 164 km connects Safaga to Qena, another town in Upper Egypt. The port of Safaga is located about 10 kilometers south of the city of Safaga.

This southern Red Sea port is far from the traditional tourist destinations of the Nile Delta and Cairo, although it is the only Egyptian port of call that allows visitors direct access to the ancient sites of Upper Egypt. Both Luxor and Aswan can be reached on a day trip from Safaga. In Luxor there is the highest concentration of monuments dating back to the Old Kingdom, thanks to which the city has earned the name of "the largest open-air museum in the world". Likewise in Luxor, Aswan Offers visitors access to the sites and wonders of ancient Egyptian history, together with the opportunity to learn about the wonderful Nubian culture, in a breathtaking landscape setting that infuses the visitor with peace and relaxation.

The cruise to safaga

Safaga is a small but lively port center, usually travelers here are just passing through, but for windsurfing or diving enthusiasts, it may be worth stopping for a while to fully enjoy its turquoise waters and coral reef off the port. However, the city is not particularly touristic, the main activity of Safaga is the export of phosphates, it is also the main local terminal to reach the Port of Duba in Saudi Arabia aboard a ferry, it is from here that thousands of pilgrims over the years have set out to reach Mecca.

Safaga Cruise Port is known to be the most convenient cruise terminal to reach the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Luxor. From the port, you can also easily reach the resort town of Hurghada, about an hour's drive north.

How to reach Luxor from Safaga port?

Most visitors reach port on a Red Sea cruise. The port is located about 241 kilometers northeast of Luxor, it takes about 3 hours to travel through the desert by private car. Public transportation is slow, uncomfortable, and unreliable, so organized shore excursions include port pickup and drop-off.

The port city was founded between 282 BC and 268 BC, originally named Philotera after the Greek Egyptian pharaoh Ptolemy II Philadelphus, who named it after his deceased sister. On Philotera's death, Ptolemy II, in addition to dedicating the city on the Red Sea to her, also dedicated a temple to her, she was also deified and her cult was established.

Safaga is a marina and a cargo port

After its foundation, Safaga remained an important trading port for a long time. Due to the presence of mineralized water springs, very saline, perfect against pathologies such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and other diseases that affect the epidermis, the city of Safaga is considered one of the most important therapeutic tourist centers, as demonstrated by special medical research. The potential of attracting international tourism to Safaga is also encouraged by its tranquil atmosphere, clean air and white sandy beaches as well as, as already mentioned, by the coral reefs and aquatic fauna which sees the presence of tuna, sharks and manta rays, which invite you to snorkel and dive. From the port you can also leave for a ride in a glass-bottomed boat to observe the seabed while remaining dry.

Kitesurfing and windsurfing are also very popular, among other things in 1993, Safaga hosted the World Windsurfing Championships. You can also practice hiking, do not miss a visit to Mons Claudianus and its ruins, about 40 kilometers from the heart of Safaga; in ancient times the Romans extracted granodiorite here, used to build columns, floors of temples and public baths.

The climate, as in much of Egypt, is hot and desert. The record highest temperature was recorded on July 30, 2002, was 46°C, while the record lowest temperature, reached on February 2, 1993, was 0°C.
