Port Said is a city of about 600,000 inhabitants, located in Egypt, to be precise in the north-east of the country. It extends over a tongue of land that extends for about 30 km located at the intersection of Lake Manzala, the Mediterranean Sea and the mouth of the Suez Canal , north of this.
And the construction of the Suez Canal is precisely the origin of the city, the first urban nucleus of this in fact was made up of the workers who worked on the great canal project. This is why it was founded in 1859 by the governor Said Pasha, hence the name of Port Said, at the time of the start of the excavations of the Suez Canal.
Port Said forms the access to the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean Sea. Just opposite, on the other side of the canal, the eastern side, is Port Fouad, with which it is conurbation, and is connected by free ferries.
The latter is now practically part of Port Said, so much so that it is not possible to identify a city center of Port Fouad, it is dependent on Port Said. If we consider the conurbation, the inhabitants reach one million.
Port Fouad was built at the end of the First World War, in December 1926, when the directors of the Suez Canal company decided to build 300 houses for their workers and officials on the Asian bank, the chosen architecture was of French inspiration, designed by the Pari School of Fine Arts
Port Said is an Egyptian coastal city very famous in ancient Egyptian history and also includes the city of Port Fouad.
Particularly interesting is the fact that if we consider the two cities as a single nucleus, in a similar way to Istanbul, in Turkey, Port Said also extends between two continents, the African and the Asian one.
Port Said is a summer destination for Egyptians and foreign tourists. Its economy is based on fishing and industry, mainly chemical, food and cigarette production.
It is also an important port both for the export of Egyptian products, such as cotton and rice, and as a refueling station for ships passing through the Suez Canal.
Port Said is also a free zone and also for this reason it is particularly famous for its very low prices .. The flea market is also famous among Egyptians.
Do not miss the excursion on a typical carriage to its attractions including the Military Museum, the National Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.
A key feature of Port Said since its foundation is that it has and has a strong international and global character. The city, particularly flourishing in the 19th and 20th centuries, was inhabited by people of various nationalities and religious faiths.
Each community has brought with it traditions, cuisine, religion and architecture.
Most of the inhabitants were originally from the countries of the Mediterranean Sea, they lived in a coexistence characterized by tolerance, contributing to a cosmopolitan climate.
As Rudyard Kipling's romantic quote quotes "If you truly wish to find someone you have known and who travels, there are two points on the globe you have but to sit and wait, sooner or later your man will come there: the docks of London and Port Said".
Which can be translated as. “If you really want to find someone you met who travels, there are two places on the globe where you just have to sit and wait, sooner or later this person will come: the docks of London and Port Said ”.
Its population at the beginning of the twentieth century was about 50,000 inhabitants of which 11,000 of European origin: it numbered among its citizens Jewish traders, Egyptian shopkeepers, Greek photographers, Italian architects, Swiss hoteliers, Maltese administrators, Scottish engineers, French bankers and diplomats from all over the world.
The lingua franca of citizens of foreign origin was French, as well as the mother tongue of the children of mixed couples, of which there were really many, particularly widespread was the marriage between French, Italians and Maltese (who at the time were Italian-speaking, previously all anglicisation of Malta).
An example and testimony of Italian culture and architecture, dating back to 1937, still present in Port Said is Casa d'Italia. A currently disused art deco building.
