Bab Zuweila in Cairo is the only southern gate of the medieval city still preserved. It was built in the 10th century and remained in operation until the 19th century, when it stopped closing every night. In Mamluk times, the area in front of the gate was an important public meeting place as well as the site of public executions, which were a popular form of entertainment at the time. The gate is 4.48 meters wide and 20.10 meters long. The gate is topped by two minarets which are part of the nearby Al-Mu'ayyad Mosque.
