The mosque is named after Al-Hakim, one of the most extravagant rulers in Egyptian history. Al Hakim became king at age 11 and held office for 24 years. Definitely cruel, he had many members of his family and collaborators murdered or tortured. However, Al Hakim was interested in the conditions of the population and often wandered around Cairo on his donkey. One night he disappeared and his body was never found. The mosque in his honor was inaugurated in 1013 and is one of the oldest mosques in Cairo. In reality it was used little as a place of worship, used instead as a warehouse, prison for the crusaders, school and then a mental asylum.
